New lightweight timber structure – contemporary Gothic interpretation, similar location to existing cathedral. Some materials and important objects reused.
The Church Property Trustees have committed themselves to a contemporary concept for a Cathedral. The contemporary Cathedral will follow the Design Guidelines drawn up by the Diocesan Architects Warren and Mahoney and adopted by the Diocesan Synod. The analysis and high-level design work leading to a contemporary Cathedral was undertaken subject to the budget constraints of the Cathedral Trust along with specialist engineering and architectural advice. In the public engagement process the strongest community support was for a contemporary option.
An independent survey found of 3819 submissions that 51% of respondents preferred a contemporary option for a cathedral, 29% a restoration option and 13% a traditional option.
The aim of the Cathedral is one that gives glory to God and offers a sacred place in Cathedral Square where the whole city may gather.
